Great Watches Under $5,000
Panerai Luminor Due PAM904
About 10 to 12 years ago, demand for Panerai watches exploded. You had to own at least one of their timepieces if you wanted to be taken seriously on the watch scene. Those days are long gone, and the Italian company fell off the radar for a while. Now, Panerai is slowly making their comeback with interesting models in various sizes. For this article, I’ve chosen one of their classier pieces, the Panerai Luminor Due. It packs many trademark Panerai details, including the case shape and crown guard, into a much more manageable, 42-mm watch. The Panerai Luminor Due is about as simple as it gets, with a date window at 3 o’clock and small seconds at 9. Thanks to an automatic movement and 3-day power reserve, this timepiece is an extremely convenient addition to any collection.
Enthusiast’s Corner: Rare and Exceptional Timepieces
JLC Master Control Calendar Moonphase
I’ll always associate Jaeger-LeCoultre with dress watches. I can’t help it. I’m well aware that JLC has also made some pretty awesome sports models in the past and that their current Polaris collection blurs the line between sporty and elegant. Still, for me, Jaegers epitomize class. Take this Master Control Calendar Moonphase, for example. Its 37-mm case is the perfect size for a dress watch; not to mention its beautiful black dial, triple calendar, and moon phase display, perhaps the most elegant of all complications. Sure, the Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Control Calendar Moonphase isn’t for everyone, but that’s exactly why it belongs here. The triple calendar function comes in handy on a daily basis, as does the automatic movement. I’ll admit that moon phase displays are more decorative than practical, but does that really matter? This watch looks like it dates back to the 1950s, but it was actually made in the late 2000s. How cool is that?
Iconic Timepieces: Great Value for Money
Yema Yachtingraf
Yema watches have been a rising star in the vintage community for a few years now. You could previously get your hands on one for a few hundred dollars, mostly from French auction sites and dealers. That’s now a thing of the past. The watch community has woken up to how amazing these watches are, even if most of them are not Swiss made, but that isn’t unique. Vintage Seikos have accomplished a similar feat. However, a French brand enjoying such success in the vintage world is far from expected. Yema watches are incredibly well designed. They come in great sizes and have versatile dials. There are also many chronograph models, which we find particularly exciting. Yema Yachtingrafs are probably the brand’s most colorful timepieces, and they often feature a funky countdown function. The Yachtingraf’s 38-mm case is the ideal size and houses the trusty, yet not too fancy, Valjoux 77XX movement. This watch is a true workhorse and an iconic vintage timepiece.
